He thought he was king of the hill and after he gobbled about 400 times in 45 minutes so did I. Another gobbler started around the hill and finally enticed him to be the first to the decoy.....otherwise I might still be waiting! Long beard ---small rudder. 18 lbs 22 mm spurs 10.5" beard I thought after missing a Jake the first day, the season might have been over for me.....sweet redemption. Not the biggest but one of the most difficult I have taken. Posts: 653 | Registered: Nov 2001

Probably the best weekend of turkey hunting I have ever had. Saturday we worked several birds, was able to help call one to my cousin. He killed his at around 8 yards. Sunday started off with rain and not much gobbling on the roost. After the rain slowed we had a few different birds gobbling several hundred yards away (we had to really strain to even hear them). We cut the distance to a couple hundred yards and started working them. They would gobble, but it didn't seem they were coming. After having to move on them a few times we finally seemed like we were making progress with one particular bird. He was probably 150-200 yards out when it seemed like he started working our way. After around an hour he finally popped up about 25 yards directly infront of me and I sealed the deal. My cousin had done most of the calling on him, so it was a team effort.
A few days before this past christmas a distant family member died unexpectantly. He and I had turkey hunted together in years past, and I decided this season I would wear one of his old treebark camo hats with built in facemask when I turkey hunted. I think it brought me good luck...now I can't decide if I should retire it or wear it next year.

Trapper I'm with you! Tag soup here too! Had 6 to 7 very close encounters over the season, but no deal. First year in 15+ years with no bird for the freezer. Oh well, had a great time chasing those birds around all season and nothing beats being outdoors in the spring! Congrats to all that were able to tag one and I can't wait till next year.

Dining on paper chili as well... between stormy weather on available days and finishing off with end of last week with the flu (no pigs involved AFAIK), it was a short season... but I got to see several birds when I was out, but learned the lesson of live hens trump decoys...
Congrats to teammate Animalhouse, and all those who scored on birds this spring!
